Solar Panels for Agriculture & Farming

Sheffield Renewables designs and installs solar PV and battery storage systems for farms across South Yorkshire. Every system is sized to your energy consumption, installed by our in-house MCS-certified team, and comes with a fixed-price quotation.

OVERVIEW

Low-cost energy for farms and agricultural operations

Agricultural businesses are among the largest rural energy users. Irrigation pumps, ventilation, refrigeration, grain drying, milking equipment and lighting create steady demand, often during daylight when solar generation is highest.

Solar adoption is increasing across UK agriculture, with 37% of farmers reporting that solar income supports long-term farm viability, highlighting its role in improving farm resilience.

OUR PROCESS

How solar and battery storage works for agriculture in Yorkshire

Solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours to power farm operations such as milking, refrigeration and grain drying, aligning with typical daytime energy demand. Across the UK, 84% of farms with solar install panels on agricultural buildings, reflecting how well farm roofs support on-site generation.

Electricity is used on-site first, reducing reliance on grid supply. In many cases, solar power is cheaper than grid electricity over the system lifetime and provides 25+ years of cost-stable generation.

Where energy use extends beyond daylight hours, battery storage stores excess generation and supplies power during early mornings, evenings or overnight, improving overall energy use across farm operations.

01

Site survey and energy assessment

We review your electricity bills, assess roof or land suitability, and record shading, orientation, and structural factors before producing a system design.

02

Fixed-price system design

You receive a detailed quotation covering panel output, projected annual generation, estimated bill reduction, and payback period — with no hidden costs.
03

MCS-certified installation

Our in-house team handles all installation, commissioning, and certification. We do not use subcontractors. All work meets current G98/G99 grid connection requirements.

04

SEG registration and handover

We register your system under the Smart Export Guarantee so you receive payment for electricity exported to the National Grid, and provide full system monitoring from day one.

APPLICATIONS

Solar energy solutions built for agricultural needs

All installations are completed by our MCS-certified, NAPIT-approved team, with an insurance-backed workmanship guarantee. Manufacturer warranties are registered in your name on completion.

Barn and outbuilding roofs

Large farm roofs support solar systems, allowing high-capacity generation without affecting use or daily operations on working agricultural buildings.

Ground-mounted arrays

Field margins and low-yield land are ideal for ground systems. Panels are installed at the best angle for South Yorkshire to maximise annual energy output.

Irrigation and water pumps

Daytime irrigation aligns well with solar generation, reducing grid reliance and lowering seasonal energy costs across farm operations.

Cold stores and refrigeration

Cold storage requires steady power throughout the day. Solar meets daytime demand, while battery storage supports overnight use at a reduced cost.

Continuous livestock systems

Ventilation, heating and feeding systems run all day and night. Battery storage supports overnight demand, helping reduce grid use and improve reliability.

Grain drying and processing

Grain drying is a major energy cost during harvest. Solar and battery storage help offset demand and reduce the cost per tonne processed.

Common Questions About Solar for Farms

Most roof-mounted solar on agricultural buildings falls under permitted development in England, subject to size and positioning limits. Ground-mounted systems usually require planning permission depending on scale and location. We assess this during the survey and advise if an application is needed.
System size depends on your electricity use and available roof or land. There is no standard size. We design each system using your actual consumption data and provide projected output and system recommendations.

Solar can reduce a significant share of grid electricity use, particularly where energy demand is highest during the day. The exact saving depends on usage patterns, system size and how much energy is used on-site.

It depends on when electricity is used. Farms with mainly daytime demand may benefit from solar alone. Where energy use extends into early mornings, evenings or overnight, battery storage helps reduce reliance on grid electricity.
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) pays for surplus electricity exported to the grid through licensed suppliers. Rates vary by supplier and tariff. Systems must be MCS-certified to qualify.
Most installations take around 4 to 10 weeks from survey to completion, depending on system size and any grid or planning requirements.
