What is solar EV charging?

Your Solar System Can Power Your Car Too

Many homeowners with solar panels export surplus electricity back to the grid during the day while charging their electric car using imported electricity later in the evening. Solar EV charging helps improve solar self-consumption by diverting excess solar generation directly to your vehicle, helping reduce reliance on grid electricity and lowering overall charging costs.

At Sheffield Renewable Services, our MCS-certified engineers install and configure solar-compatible EV charging systems across Sheffield and South Yorkshire, integrating solar PV, battery storage and smart charging technology into one complete setup.

How it works

What Solar EV Charging Actually Saves

These figures use the Ofgem Q2 2026 electricity rate of 24.67p/kWh, current SEG export rates and a UK average annual mileage of 7,400 miles. Actual savings vary depending on your system size, charging habits and tariff.

Grid charging only

~£555

Estimated annual EV charging cost at 7,400 miles/year using only grid electricity at 24.67p/kWh. Equivalent to approximately 7.5p per mile.

Solar divert — no battery

~£167

Estimated annual EV charging cost using a 4kWp solar system and Zappi ECO+ charging. Solar generation may cover around 70% of annual charging demand.

Solar divert + battery

~£60

Estimated annual EV charging cost using solar PV, a Zappi charger and a 10kWh battery. Solar and stored energy may cover around 89% of charging demand.

*Estimated using 850kWh/kWp/year solar generation, 24.67p/kWh electricity and EV efficiency of 3.4 miles/kWh. Actual savings vary by usage and tariff.

Under the Smart Export Guarantee, you typically receive 5–15p per kWh for electricity exported to the grid. But the unit rate you pay to import electricity for EV charging, appliances and lighting is currently around 24.67p/kWh under the Ofgem price cap.

That difference, usually around 10–20p per kWh, is what makes solar EV charging so effective. Instead of exporting surplus solar at 7.5p and later importing electricity at 24.67p to charge your car, solar divert uses that surplus directly for EV charging.

Over a year, the savings can become substantial. A 4kWp Sheffield solar system with a Zappi charger in ECO+ mode, covering around 70% of a typical driver’s annual charging demand, can reduce EV charging costs by approximately £390 per year compared with grid-only charging.

Solar divert supports daytime charging, but most drivers also charge overnight. Smart EV tariffs such as Octopus Go, Intelligent Octopus and OVO Drive Anytime help reduce costs further by providing lower overnight electricity rates when solar generation is unavailable.

The Zappi and Ohme Home Pro both support smart tariff scheduling. During the day, the charger can prioritise surplus solar generation, then automatically switch to cheaper overnight electricity when required.

Combined, daytime solar charging and low-cost overnight tariffs can reduce effective EV charging costs to around 1–2p per mile for a well-optimised Sheffield setup, compared with roughly 7.5p per mile using standard grid electricity alone.

Solar & EV Charging Installed by Certified Team

Most EV charger companies do not install solar. Most solar companies subcontract the EV charger installation to a third party. We do both with the same in-house team under the same MCS and NAPIT accreditations.

Common Questions About Solar EV Charging

In most cases, yes. If your existing solar system has a standard string inverter with a clamp output or a hybrid inverter, a Zappi can usually be retrofitted without any changes to the solar installation itself. We carry out a brief compatibility check during the survey visit to confirm. 1 .We’ve successfully retrofitted solar EV charging onto systems from most Sheffield-area installers, regardless of inverter brand or system age.
In ECO+ mode (solar only), the Zappi requires a minimum of approximately 1.4kW of surplus generation to activate charging. This is the minimum power needed to keep the charger’s internal systems running while delivering electricity to the vehicle. Below this threshold, the charger pauses and resumes automatically. In ECO mode, you can set a minimum charge rate. The charger uses all available solar surplus and draws the remainder from the grid to hit that minimum, so charging never pauses.
ECO+ uses solar surplus only. The charger never draws from the grid. If surplus drops below approximately 1.4kW, charging pauses and resumes when it recovers. This maximises your free solar miles but means charging speed varies with generation and pauses on cloudy days. ECO mode lets you set a minimum charge rate. The Zappi uses all available solar surplus and tops up from the grid to hit your chosen minimum. This guarantees a certain charge rate regardless of conditions, but some grid electricity may be used when solar is low.
Solar generation in Sheffield in winter is lower, typically 30–40% of peak summer output, so the amount of surplus available for EV charging is reduced. 2 .However, ECO mode can still provide useful solar-assisted charging on bright winter days, and smart overnight tariff integration such as Octopus Go ensures your car charges at the cheapest available grid rate when solar is not providing sufficient surplus. Year-round, the combination of solar divert and smart tariffs helps reduce the overall cost per mile.
No. Solar divert works without a battery, but battery storage makes it significantly more effective. Without a battery, solar divert only works during daylight hours while your system is generating surplus. If you plug in at 6pm, that surplus has already been exported. With a battery, daytime surplus charges the battery first and can then supply your EV when you plug in during the evening. For most working households, battery storage combined with solar panels and a Zappi charger delivers the highest level of solar self-consumption.

Solar EV charging requires a home EV charger, which in turn requires off-street parking such as a driveway, garage or private parking space where a cable can safely reach your vehicle from a wall-mounted charger. If you do not have off-street parking, a home charger cannot usually be installed, so solar EV charging at home is not possible. Public EV charging stations powered partly by renewable energy do exist, but they are separate from a home solar EV charging setup.
